Lightnin’ Hopkins was certainly one of the more colourful blues musicians recording here and there during the 1950s and 60s. Since he had been ripped off by unscrupulous record companies so many times in the past, he had developed a way of ensuring he always got his money on time. He would accept any recording session and turn up on time, but until he had the cash in his hand, he wouldn’t start recording a single note! He was equally as fast when it came to creating material. Happy Blues For John Glenn is a song inspired by John Glenn’s space flight that saw him become the first American in space – Lightnin’ caught the news story on the television in the morning and wrote the song on his way to the studio, recording it that afternoon!
