Elvis was still serving in the US Army when film producer Hal Wallis visited him to discuss future roles. Out of his four previous films, only one, King Creole, had garnered praise and decent box office results. It was the former that had convinced Elvis that he had a future in Hollywood, and whilst the plot for G.I. Blues hardly stretched Elvis as an actor, his acting ability earned further accolades from the critics. The soundtrack album was also a success, topping the charts on both sides of the Atlantic.
