Formed in 1961 by Peter Yarrow, Paul Stookey and Mary Travers, the trio rose to become one of the most successful folk groups of the 1960s and at the forefront of the folk explosion of the same decade. Whilst the group were effectively manufactured by manager Albert Grossman in so much as he auditioned numerous singers to become members of a folk group, Peter Paul & Mary all brought something special to the group. In the case of Peter and Paul, it was song writing and production skills, which they used to great effect on their debut album. A US chart topper, where it resided for more than a month, the album gave rise to the double Grammy Award winning single If I Had A Hammer (Best Folk Recording and Best Pop Performance) as well as the hit Lemon Tree.
