Composer and originator of The Twist, the biggest dance craze ever to sweep the world, is a young singer from Detroit. In addition, he is leader of the fame Midnighters vocal group, a top pop and rhythm and blues attraction for over a decade. Ballard’s first spurt of national prominence came in 1954 when his recording of Work With Me Annie was voted the #1 R&B record of that year by Billboard magazine. Also, his composition of Dance With Me Henry was one of the top ten tunes of 1954. In 1958, he developed a dance step for use in his personal appearance tours. Later that year, he wrote and recorded music and lyrics to go with the dance step and The Twist was born. Since then it has been a hit three times, something that has never before happened in the record business.
