Dion enjoyed considerable success fronting The Belmonts, registering nine major hits in a little over two years before striking out on his own in 1961. As a soloist his successes were even greater, culminating in the chart topping Runaround Sue and The Wanderer, that peaked just one place lower. These singles may have singled him out as something of a rock and roll star (as well as a ten idol), but as his later recordings proved, Dion was a dangerous artist to try and pigeon hole. The album Lovers Who Wander is a perfect example; as well as his interpretations of the likes of Shout and Stagger Lee, there are five of his own compositions, something of a new avenue for Dion to explore. The album was extremely well received upon initial release, hitting #12 on the US album chart and giving rise to three hit singles, with the title track a #3 success.
