It is the lot of Solomon Burke to be one of the most overlooked of all soul singers, yet he probably did more than most to establish the genre as a major commercial success. Indeed, for several years it was his hits that kept Atlantic afloat and able to avoid bankruptcy, enabling later arrivals such as Aretha Franklin to flourish. This album predates Solomon’s arrival at Atlantic too, being an album that his previous label Apollo culled from their back catalogue. Much of that work for Apollo was a mixed bag collection of singles, lacking any real direction. At one point, the label had visions of positioning him as a serious rival to Harry Belafonte, only for Solomon to resist. What these tracks do show in abundance is his early abilities as both a singer and writer, talents that would help propel him to the very top as the 1960s progressed.
