One of two albums recorded by Jimmy Smith on the same day (the other being Back At The Chicken Shack), Midnight Special is a potent album recorded by a potent crew of musicians, including Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Donald Bailey on drums and of course Jimmy Smith on organ. By all accounts a prolific organist (thirty albums recorded in barely seven years), Jimmy Smith was also an artist that cared very deeply about the quality of each and every one. Midnight Special is ranked among his best albums, and it is difficult to imagine any from his rich catalogue that are better than this. A superb outing from start to finish.
