One of the first true French worldwide stars, Serge Gainsbourg’s early career found him pursuing a number of musical paths, and several of these are present on this album. There’s a hint of jazz, a bit of calypso and more than a smattering of pop, all delivered in a distinct manner. In 1959, when this particular was first recorded and released, Serge still had ambitions of being accepted as a singer, although it was his later writing and production work that enforced his reputation. Throughout the album Serge is accompanied by the Alain Goraguer Orchestra, a long time collaborator of both Serge and fellow musician Boris Vian. The cover itself is something of a tribute to Vian, who died the same year the album was released.
