As fine a be-bop trumpeter as any of his contemporaries, Joe Gordon frequently appeared on the brink of greatness, only to be held back by a succession of mishaps, most self-inflicted thanks to a drug dependency. Yet such was his ability, even now his body of work is highly regarded, with the Lookin’ Good album one of the high spots. His second and final album released as a leader, Lookin’ Good hints at what have been, with Joe writing all of the album’s eight tracks and soloing to perfection throughout. Equally worthy of praise is alto saxophonist Jimmy Woods; this is a strong musical line-up contributing to an excellent album.
